F-Zero X (N64)

Futuristic racers have been done before andthey will be done again, Wipeout, Episode one Racer and extreme-G to name but a few. They all have their differences, strengths and weaknesses, but F-Zero X is a real standout.

It doesn't have the most impressive graphics, however, what it lacks graphically it makes up in everything else, the wide variety of tracks and the outstanding random track generator in paricular make the game a never ending challenge. There are 4 different tournaments to choose from, Jack, Queen, King and Joker before we even get to the X-cup (made up of random tracks.) You have 28 charcters and their craft to choose from. And you can play in a variety of modes including Grand Prix, Time Attack, Multiplayer, and the Death Run. The Death Run is really enjoyable, you go round a large loop several times attempting to destroy the other racers. Another cunning touch to the game is in multiplayer, where if you retire, you can play a one-armed bandit in an attempt to drain other racers' energy. This game is great and will last anyone a long time, and with it on sale for as little as £9.99 (in Electronics Boutique) there's no excuse for you not to buy it.
